Night shifts are when fuel stations are most vulnerable: fewer people around, limited visibility and tired staff. Good night security is not only about stopping crime. It protects your people, your stock and your profit.
The hidden costs of poor night security
Most owners think only of stolen cash and fuel. The real damage goes deeper.
- Direct losses: stolen cash and fuel, damaged equipment, lost sales while the station is closed
- Staff impact: fear and injury risk, high turnover on night shifts, legal and administrative costs
- Reputation: customers lose trust and night sales fall
- Long-term costs: security upgrades, extra guards, higher insurance, emergency preparation
Where most stations get it wrong
- Poor lighting and blind spots: dark corners and burnt-out bulbs around the pumps and cash area let people approach unseen
- One person on the night shift: the same person handles cash, fuel and security, and is exposed during breaks or emergencies
- Weak CCTV: old cameras, poor night vision, little storage or cameras pointing the wrong way give footage you cannot use
- Too much cash on hand: a large amount in the register or safe at night makes your station an attractive target
Build protection in layers
No single fix is enough. The setup that works combines the physical site, technology and good procedures.
- Lighting: LED floodlights over all pumps and the cash area, motion lights around the edges, backup lighting, and a monthly check to replace dead bulbs
- Access control: a secured cash room with a time-lock safe, limited access to fuel control systems, and panic buttons in key places
- Cameras: HD cameras with night vision, 30 days of storage and mobile viewing, placed so there are no blind spots
- Alerts: motion detectors, door sensors and cash drawer alerts that notify you and the security company at once
- Check-ins: staff check in through a mobile app every 30 minutes, and a missed check-in raises an alert
- Staffing: at least 2 people at night, one for fuel service and one for security and cash, with regular rotation and background checks
Daily night checklist
Print this and have your night staff complete it every shift.
- At the start of the shift: all outside lights work, CCTV is running, panic buttons are tested, cash is under ৳15,000, doors and windows are secure
- Every 2 hours: walk around the site, do the app check-in, check fuel levels, note anything suspicious
When things go wrong
- Robbery: do what they demand, because your life is worth more than money. Press the panic button if it is safe, note how many people there were and what they looked like, call 999 once they leave, and touch nothing until the police arrive
- Suspicious activity: stay alert but do not confront anyone, check that the cameras cover the area, tell the security company and the owner, write down the details, and think about closing for a while if the threat looks close
- System failure: switch to backup lighting, cameras and communication, do manual checks more often, call technical support, bring in extra people if needed, and record what happened
Where to start
Start with the basics, proper lighting and a good CCTV system, then add layers. The goal is not to turn your station into a fortress. It is to make it a harder target than the station down the road. This week, walk your station at night and see what a thief would see, and ask your night staff what worries them most.
